Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate) visa – What has changed?

The Temporary Graduate visa can be a stepping stone to permanent residency and is a great way to gain valuable work experience in Australia.

If you are approaching the end of your studies and thinking about applying for a Temporary Graduate visa there are some of the recent changes might affect you.

From 25 November 2023, the following changes have been introduced to the Temporary Graduate visa:

  • Australian Study Requirement – If you were required to undertake study online with an Australia Education Provider during the COVID concession period (from 1 February 2020 to 25 November 2023) that online study will continue to count towards the Australian Study Requirement. Any online study after the concession period from 26 November 2023 onwards will not count towards the Australian Study Requirement.
  • Apply in Australia – You must be located in Australia at time you apply for this visa. This means you can no longer apply when you are located outside of Australia. Subsequent entrant applicants are not impacted by this change.
  • Visa Grant – there are no longer any restrictions as to whether or not you are in Australia at the time you are granted this visa. If this visa is granted to you whilst you are outside Australia you will be given a date for you to arrive in Australia (anywhere up to 12 months from the date of the visa grant).
